OFELIA SOLIS PEREZ

GENERAL SUMMARY Maiz, Zea mays (L.), is one of the oldest food grains known, and due to its nutritional properties for the production of animal protein, human consumption and industrial use, it has become one of the most important products in international markets. About 24% of the hectares planted in Mexico are destined for the sowing of white corn, with an annual production of 21.1 million tons. In 2015 in Morelos, 31,249 ha were sown and an average yield of 2.92 t∙ha-1 was obtained. (SAGARPA-INEGI 2016). However, the conventional practices used in this crop, based on the use of fertilizers and insecticides, have contributed to the deterioration of the structure and depletion of soil nutrients, causing also insect resistance, environmental contamination and damage to the environment. health of the population. Faced with this problem, it is necessary to apply techniques that avoid these adverse effects, so the purpose of this work was: to evaluate the effects of the application of vermicompost of vegetable waste from the market on the growth and yield of the maize crop, as well as as the susceptibility of the third stage larvae of Phyllophaga sp. to two native isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae. For this, three experiments were carried out, the first consisted of evaluating in pots the effect of the application of five doses of vermicompost on twelve variables of the cultivation of maize in clay soil and loam in the agricultural cycle of autumn-winter 2013/14 in Ayala Morelos, Mexico. The experiment was established in a randomized complete block design with an arrangement of plots subdivided into three repetitions. The results indicated that in the reproductive stage two (R2), the plant height in the treatments with vermicompost equaled the treatment of inorganic fertilization. The doses of 5 and 10 t∙ha-1 of vermicompost along with the inorganic fertilization produced the ears of greater diameter, weight and grain yield. A significant effect was detected for the grain yield in the triple interaction between the studied factors (soil, variety, fertilization dose), and between the soil type factors and the fertilization dose. Taking as application dose x 5 t∙ha-1, the effect of agricultural cycle factors and type of fertilization on quantitative characteristics of corn germplasm was evaluated, the presence of interactions between agricultural cycles, type of fertilization and corn varieties was determined and it was verified whether vermicompost fertilization applied alone or in combination with inorganic fertilizers can substitute or reduce the use of organic fertilizers, during the autumn-winter 2014/15 and spring-summer 2015 agricultural cycles, in a treatment arrangement of subdivided plots , under an experimental design of randomized complete blocks with four repetitions. The results showed that the highest height of the plant and stem diameter were presented with inorganic fertilization and integrated fertilization of vermicompost and mineral fertilizer, and that the genotypes evaluated responded differently to these same treatments, being the varieties H- 515 and UAEM-BD1 those that presented higher yields. The positive effect of the vemicomposta depended more on the genotype than on the agricultural cycle of application, and even when the treatment with vermicompost did not report the highest yields, the combined treatment could be an alternative in the short and medium term, since it would reduce the costs for the use of chemical fertilizers and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil would be improved, as well as waste that would cause a great environmental problem in the area. On the other hand, experiment three consisted of determining the pathogenicity, virulence and interaction between native strains of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana of the state of Morelos against P. vetula. The isolation of M. anisopliae was more pathogenic than that of B. bassiana. M. anisopliae isolated from the host Phyllophaga sp. was more pathogenic (46.66 to 73.33%) than the one that was isolated from the trap insect G. mellonella (00.00 to 20%). The mortality caused by the isolation of M. anisopliae, with higher pathogenicity, HI-019 (86.06%), decreased significantly (P ˂ 0.05) when inoculated simultaneously with B. bassiana HI-113 (61.06%), but statistically it was the same as when the larvae were inoculated only with B. bassiana (52.73%). The estimated values of the LC50 of the isolates of M. anisopliae Ma17 and Ma19 against the larvae of P. vetula were 4,749 × 107 conidia / mL and 7,684 × 108 conidia / mL, respectively, being statistically equal.
