LIBIA IVONNE PEREZ TORRES

Maternal behavior includes care, suckling and protection towards the offspring, in order to promote their survival, the sheep are characterized by a high maternal selectivity. However, non-filial suckling has been observed in similar species of ungulates, so the frequency, characteristics and possibles benefits of non-filial suckling in domestic sheep were determined (Experiment I). On the other hand, some routine practices in farms as tail-docking in lambs may alter the relationship mother-young during lactation, thus it was evaluated if the movement of the tail as an odor propagator can play an important role of communication between the mother and young (Experiment II). In regards a particularity of maternal behaviour in cows is that they show an active defense through of behaviour aggressive to protect their newborns front situation of danger, causing sometimes accidents to workers, especially when the animals are kept in extensive systems which allows them to manifestate similar behaviours as wild ungulates, like a maternal care communal or groupal and maternal protection around peripartum. Therefore, to determine if the protection reaction of Bos indicus cows to different practices is affected by their time relative around peripartum and the possible individual characteristics influences (temperament and hierarchy) (Experiment III) and the group dynamics of zebu cows relation with the calves (Experiment IV). This thesis is integrated by four experiments, two in sheep were conducted in the Experimental Center- Faculty of Agricultural Sciences UAEM (Experiments I and II) and two experiments in cattle were conducted in the Center for Teaching, Research, and Extension in Tropical Animal Husbandry - Faculty of Medicine Veterinary UNAM (Experiments III and IV). In experiment I, 33 ewes and their lambs were used from parturition to weaning, the episodes of non-filial suckling attempts (NFSA) and suckling (NFS) during lactating were recorded, which are presented in a low percentage, the multiples birth lambs (doubles and triplets) and males displayed more frequencies NFSA and NFS favored when keep in a pen but does not benefit the lambs weight. For experiment II, 14 ewes and their lambs were observed during 8 days, the characteristics of suckling were recorded in two groups , group (T) the tail was immobilized by the use of an adhesive tape that 4 kept it temporarily attached to the right leg of the lamb, while the rest remained intact as control (C ),during suckling in average lambs that not wag their tail (T) displayed shorter suckling periods than the lambs that wage their tail (C), frequency of checking per suckling by their mothers were more in T lambs than lambs C, nevertheless consumption of milk no was different. In the experiments III and IV, 31 zebu cows were evaluated during period of peripartum (5 weeks), the animals were keept in extensive conditions as an only group, protective reaction was related with temperament measures and hierarchy range (Experiment III), intra-individual variation cow-cow and cow-calf interactions were monitored with aerial pictures using a Drone (Experiment IV). Cows proximate to calving showed protective behaviour even though in low intensities, lactating females displays major protective behaviour than calving cows, the females that were more aggressive and protective to the calves had a rank of hierarchy high, temperament not vary around of peripartum and did not affect the protective reaction (Experiment III). The experiment IV determined that the zebu females are grouped according their physiologic state, and the calves maintain closer proximity to lactating females than calving females, while pregnant females stay away from them, distance mother- young is major when these remain with some female of herd (Experiment IV). In conclusion, in ewes the non-filial suckling is infrequent and did not benefits in lambs weight, as well as the wagging tail might have communication purposes between the lambs and their mothers while suckling, he results suggest that it is needed to evaluate the possible effects and disturbances in the behavioral and welfare animal of the practice docking tail in lambs. Moreover, in cows zebu the maternal protective behaviour is observed in the peripartum associated their hierarchy rank but not their temperament. Females cows showed preferential relationships, grouping according to their physiology state, where the youngs are associate more with lactating females and their mothers move further away more when these remain with some female of herd. This indicates that zebu cattle can manifest a communal maternal protective a defense toward of the calves of herd. Understanding the dynamics of the 5 individuals, social components and behavioural changes are fundamental to welfare and productivity in cattle in extensive systems. Subsequently the summary of each experiment is shown in detail.
