Tres vidas de amor por las palabras: tres diccionarios del español

Elaborar un diccionario es seguramente una de las mayores locuras que una persona puede realizar debido al tiempo invertido, pero así son los amantes de las palabras y libros que las contienen: prefieren vivir en los mundos posibles que ellas crean que en los hechos sensoriales anclados al mundo real. Las palabras tienen una vida mucho más dilatada que la nuestra y nos ofrecen perdurar más allá de la extinción material. Los tres autores que se abordan aquí son, en este sentido, inmortales, pues serán recordados por sus obras mientras haya hablantes del español o estudiosos de otros idiomas que se interesen por nuestra lengua; los tres vivieron de manera austera y disciplinada, entregados a la paciente y dura labor de confeccionar las que quizá sean las mejores obras de la lexicografía en español.

Making a dictionary is surely one of the craziest things a person can do because of the time invested, but that is how lovers of words and the books that contain them are: they prefer to live in the possible worlds they create rather than in the sensory facts attached to the real world. Words have a much longer life than ours and offer us to endure beyond material extinction. The three authors discussed here are, in this sense, immortal, since they will be remembered for their works as long as there are speakers of Spanish or students of other languages who are interested in our language; all three lived in an austere and disciplined manner, dedicated to the patient and hard work of producing what are perhaps the best works of lexicography in Spanish.
