| dc.description | RESUMEN El pez cíclido convicto Amatitlania nigrofasciata, es uno de los peces cíclidos más agresivos y fue introducido a la cuenca del Río Balsas en el centro de México donde habita el cíclido nativo mojarra criolla, Cichlasoma istlanum. Se asume que la población de este pez nativo ha sido afectada negativamente por la introducción del pez cíclido convicto. Estas dos especies han sido observadas realizando conductas agresivas por recursos como alimento o refugio a lo largo de esta cuenca. En este trabajo, se evaluó la interacción agonística entre estas dos especies utilizando métodos experimentales controlados. Se registró el número de despliegues, golpes, ataques por la boca, embestidas, uso de refugio, defensa de refugio y consumo de alimento. Contrario a lo comúnmente reportado, la mojarra criolla realizó mayor número de conductas agresivas y obtuvo los recursos en disputa (refugio y comida). | es_MX |
| dc.description | ABSTRACT The convict cichlid fish Amatitlania nigrofasciata, one of the most aggressive fish species, was introduced to the Balsas River basin in central Mexico, home of the native cichlid Mexican mojarra, Cichlasoma istlanum. Local populations of the Mexican mojarra have been hypothesized to be negatively affected by the introduction of the non-native convict cichlid fish. The two species have been observed engaging in aggressive behaviours over resources such as food or shelter along this basin. We evaluated the agonistic interaction between the native fish, Mexican mojarra, and the non-native convict cichlid fish. In experimental contests between the species displays, bites, mouth-contact chases, refuge use and defence, and food consumed were recorded and analysed. Contrary to what is commonly reported, the Mexican mojarra engaged in a greater number of agonistic behaviour than the convict cichlid fish and more successfully obtained the resources in dispute (refuge and food).
