ABSTRAC The Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells (SMFC) are an alternative energy source that has recently taken much scientific interest due to the growing demand for enenrgy and the search for new sustainable source, the SMFC can contribute to satisfy this need, however this technology still has deficiencies, the main disadvantage is the low power developed. This research focused first on designing a prototype of an economic SMCF. The design/configuration of all cells was the same and the main materials used were: commercial PVC to manufacture the cell, unidirectional carbon cloth as cathode (fibreGlast 2583-C), anaerobic river sediment (as anolyte and substrate), oxygen dissolved in the catholyte, supplied by the air bubbling. The objective was to find the best material for the anode of the SMFC, maintaining the cathode material invariable. For the anode, three different materials were evaluated: reticulated vitreous carbon (RCV) of three different porosities (10, 30 and 60 pores per linear inch (ppi)), unidirectional carbon cloth (fiberGlast 2583-C) and commercial mesh stainless steel (8 threats per centimeter). The performance of the anode (in terms of power density) was evaluated in terms of three factors: 1) the increase in the conductivity of the catholyte expressed directly as Na2SO4 concentration, 2) the use of chitin as an additional substrate in the anodic chamber (two sources of chitin, crushed shrimp exoskeleton and reactive grade chitin were evaluated), 3) the use of MnO2 fixed on the surface of the cathode (carbon cloth) as the catalyzing agent of the O2 reduction reaction. In decreasing form, the following power densities were obtained, CVR of 60 ppi (4.24 mW m-2), unidirectional carbon cloth (2.70 mW m-2), CVR of 30 ppi (2.13 mW m- 2) and CVR of 10 ppi (0.94 mW m-2) For the CVR (60 ppi), the presence of low concentrations (0.034 M) of Na2SO4 in the catholyte showed a significant increase in power (5.13 mW m-2). For the same cathode, the single addition of chitin substantially increased the power density (15 mW m-2 with 12 g of natural chitin). With the addition of chitin, plus 0.02 M of Na2SO4 (in the catholyte) the power density was increased to 31.86 mW m-2. Finally, with the combination of 12 g of chitin in the anolyte, 0.02 M of Na2SO4 in the catholyte and MnO2 deposited on the surface of the cathode, 109.8 mW m-2 is obtained. Although all the factors evaluated in this research have a direct influence on the performance of the BCSC, it was observed that the organic matter content and the O2 reduction reaction are the critical factors that must be specially considered in their design. This type of systems are attractive for the generation of electricity with the coupling of a DC-DC voltage booster, supercapacitors, a charge/discharge control for use in places with difficult access to the electricity grid to power low-level devices power consumption intermittently.
