In this work, the synthesis of graphite oxide is presented by an electrochemical method, using as electrolytes: H2SO4, H3PO4 y HNO3. Subsequently, the electrochemically oxidized graphite (EOG-H2SO4, EOG-H3PO4 y EOG-HNO3), was used as a support for platinum nanoparticles (Pt) synthesized by the method of chemical reduction of metal salts. The effect of support oxidation on the dispersion of the nanoparticles was studied, and the catalytic response towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the different catalysts was evaluated by means of the rotating disc electrode (RDE) technique. For comparison Pt nanoparticles were also deposited on Vulcan carbon (Pt/VC) and oxidized Vulcan carbon (Pt/OVC). The catalysts Pt/EOG-H2SO4 and Pt/VC presented better catalytic activity according to the electrochemical results. Stability tests were performed on these materials. Finally, the catalyst more stable and active towards the RRO was the Pt/EOG-H2SO4. For this reason, it was used as a cathode in a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) and its performance in a single fuel cell was evaluated. It should be mentioned that the physical and morphological properties of the support and the catalysts were evaluated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy. (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET surface area and electrical conductivity. This work is divided into 5 chapters, the first corresponds to the background where previous research works that relate to this project are reviewed. It also describes the approach of the problem, the justification and objectives. In chapter two the basic concepts that support the proposal of the research work are described. Chapter 3 (experimental methodology) describes the procedure for the synthesis of electrochemically oxidized graphite and of the different catalysts. Also describes the materials, reagents and equipment used in the different stages. Chapter 4 corresponds to the series of results obtained from the synthesis, the characterization techniques and the electrochemical tests. In chapter 5, corresponding to the conclusions and perspectives for this thesis are presented. Finally, the references consulted and a section of appendices that complement this research work are attached.
