Estudio de acero inoxidable 316L de uso quirúrgico

ALFONSO MONZAMODETH ROMAN SEDANO

Abstract In this work, the pitting failure of commercially available surgical screws for implantation in veterinary use was studied. Two samples of stainless steel from different lots that were assumed accomplished the requirements for surgical use, showed different performances, some of them showed pitting corrosion; the rest did not present the mentioned problem. The steel from which the screws were manufactured was classified as stainless steel 316L. Semi-quantitative elemental analyzes were performed by means of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to verify the elements present in the alloy, the result was a chemical composition corresponding to the austenitic steel 316. Both materials with and without sting were characterized by dark field and light field metallography. Massive precipitation was observed in the damaged implant. To complement the screws were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), finding in the samples with failure, pitting along the entire matrix and an apparent directional deformation. The atomic absorption elementary quantitative analysis was use for the elemental characterization, the exact chemical composition of each material was obtained, resulting in both cases (failure and without failure) that the screws are outside the ranges of chemical composition required by the ASTM F 139 standard. In the other hand, the Vickers micro-hardness test in both cases presented a greater hardness, this due to the increase in precipitates contained in the implant with pitting failure, since they provide greater mechanical properties such as hardness but lower resistance to pitting in corrosive media. A theoretical ideal chemical composition and heat treatment range was proposed to avoid the failure presented in the characterized implants. The proposal was developed considering a relationship between the chemical composition, the equivalent number of pitting resistance (PRE) both earlier established in the ASTM F 139, the Schaeffler - Delong diagram, heat iv treatment and the stacking fault energy (SFE). The calculations by experimental characterization of SFE as a function of the chemical composition and heat treatment were obtained from the literature, the percentages by weight of elements obtained were used to calculate the values of PRE, nickel equivalent and chromium equivalent, the last two belonging to the Schaeffler - Delong diagram. In addition, three types of heat treatment were carried out to experimentally demonstrate their influence on intergranular corrosion. As a result, the optimization of the chemical composition and heat treatment was proposed using a feed forward backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN). The optimization was carried out under the ASTM F 139 standard (chemical composition-PRE), expected microstructure predicted by the Schaeffler - Delong diagram, the type of heat treatment and the SFE, controlling in the latter minimum possible values.
