Abstract Water availability and energy consumption are issues of prime importance at the global level. Micro turbines for micro-hydroelectric systems with use of low heads are gaining ground due to the crisis of fossil fuels, as well as advances in research that have led to new designs. When developing a new micro turbine, it is necessary to test different operating conditions to know its hydrodynamics. The design analyzed in the present work consists of three fundamental parts: a nozzle with 8 fixed vanes to direct the flow, a rotor with 11 vanes where the energy exchange takes place and, finally, a diffuser that has the function of promoting the release of water without significant losses and also fixes the whole set to the interior of the pipe. A considerable number of operation points were determined with which the operation curves were constructed and the point of best efficiency of the micro turbine was obtained. Simulations were performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), varying the operating conditions: head, flow and rotational speed. An RNG k-Omega turbulence model was used in the simulations. With the numerical results of the simulations, the operation and hill curves were constructed, which describe the behavior of the machine. The study showed that efficiencies are obtained over 60% for falls between 10m to 16m.
