SERGIO RUBEN GONZAGA SEGURA

Abstract Magnesium (Mg) is one of the most promising materials due to its lightness and because it is currently used for bioengineering applications. Mg possesses a number of attractive characteristics that make Mg-based materials potentially used for applications in the medical industry due to its good biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this work, ternary alloys of Mg-Zn-Ca were synthesized by mechanical milling (Mm). The objective of this work was the evaluation of the cytotoxic effect of the Mg base alloys produced by MM, as well as the effect of the milling time on their microstructural properties, the Mg base alloys were synthesized in a planetary mill under argon atmosphere using a container stainless steel and balls. The milling process was carried out at 400 rpm for various millin times 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 hours. The refinement analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns shows the presence of the MgZn phase. The results showed that it is possible to obtain alloys by MM, the alloyed powders obtained by MM at different times were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Vickers microhardness tests (Hv) were carried out by applying an indentation load of 200 gr. Cytotoxicity is very important to determine some toxic effect of Mg base alloys, cytotoxic tests were carried out by the Sulforhodamine B (SRB) method which revealed that Mg65% Zn30% Ca5% and Mg70% Zn25%Ca5% alloys did not induce toxicity in the cells.
